Once again, the sensation of the evening took place in front of the stage: after her celebrated Werther, the young Kapellmeisterin Anja Bihlmaier’s Rusalka proved she is amongst the most talented conductors of the younger generation.

BIOGRAPHY

The emerging German conductor Anja Bihlmaier is equally at home on the operatic and symphonic stage. She studied under Scott Sandmeier at the Freiburg Conservatory of Music and under Dennis Russell Davies and Jorge Rotter at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

Since the 2015-16 season, Anja Bihlmaier holds the position of 1st Kapellmeisterin and Deputy Music Director at the Staatstheater Kassel. Previously she held the position of 2nd Kapellmeisterin at the Staatsoper Hannover (under Karen Kamensek) and at Theater Chemnitz (under Frank Beermann). In 2005, Anja Bihlmaier was selected to join the Dirigentenforum des Deutschen Musikrates (Conducting Forum of the German Music Council). In 2006, she was awarded the 3rd Prize at the International Dimitris Mitropoulos Competition for Conductors in Athens.

In the 2017-18 season Anja Bihlmaier gives her debut at the Volksoper in Vienna with performances of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and at the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken/Kaiserslautern. Moreover, she gives her US-debut at Toledo Symphony Orchestra and conducts orchestras such as Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Jönköping Sinfonietta, Wermland Opera Orchestra, Nordic Chamber Orchestera and Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra. As Guest Conductor, she returns to the Turku Symphony Orchestra and to the Gothenborg University Orchestra amongst others. At the Saarländisches Staatstheater she conducts a revival of Puccini‘s La Bohème and also three symphony concerts at the Staatstheater Kassel, where she also leads a new production of Nicolai‘s Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor.

In her first season as First Kapellmeisterin at the Staatstheater Kassel she conducted new productions of Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Bellini’s Norma, as well as revivals of Tchaikovksy’s Eugene Onegin, Verdi’s Rigoletto and La bohème. In Kassel she also conducted two symphonic programmes. In July 2015 she took over performances of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde from Patrick Ringborg and was celebrated equally by the press and the audience.

In the 2016-17 season Anja Bihlmaier conducted the premieres of Verdi’s Luisa Miller and Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Staatstheater Kassel, and a new production of Rigoletto at the Oper im Steinbruch at St. Margarethen, Austria. Moreover, she returned to Staatsoper Hannover to conduct a revival of Bizet’s Carmen.

From season 2013-14 until 2014-15 Anja Bihlmaier was 2nd Kapellmeisterin at the Staatsoper Hannover, where she conducted new productions of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty and Grétry’s Zémire et azor, and revivals of Eugene Oneginand Carmen. Amongst the highlights of her final season were Massenet’s Werther (named „Best New Production of the Season 2014-2015“) and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. As Guest Conductor at the Staatsoper Hannover, Ms. Bihlmaier conducted the opening premiere of the 2015-16 season, Dvořák’s Rusalka directed by Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, which was met with great critical acclaim.

Equally at home on the operatic and symphonic stage, she has successfully performed with orchestras such as the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Ensemble Resonanz, the Philharmonie Südwestfalen, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonieorchester des Mozarteum Salzburg, the Orchestra of Colours in Athens and the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie.

Anja Bihlmaier looks back on successful collaborations with the Nürnberger Symphoniker, the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Sinfonieorchester Münster, the Hofer Symphoniker, the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim, the Württembergische Kammerorchester Heilbronn, the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra, the Guildhall School Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the University Manchester.

…Über das episodische hinaus weist jedoch die musikalische Realisierung. Anja Bihlmaier, findet einen kraftvollen und zugleich sensiblen Mozart-Ton. Rhythmisch federnd und temporeich kommen die „Türkenmusiken“ daher. Dagegen verbinden feine Bläserfarben etwa bei Konstanzes Arie „Traurigkeit ward mir zum Lose“ transparente Leichtigkeit mit Tiefe….
